Joint Replacement

Total hip replacements are performed at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. The wait time may be related to:

  • patient preference
  • clinical assessment
  • time of year
  • the surgeon’s availability to perform the surgery.

What is Total Hip Replacement Surgery?

Total hip replacement surgery removes the ends of both bones in a damaged joint and replaces them with an artificial/prosthetic joint.

Total Hip Replacement Wait Times

Wait times for total hip replacements are being monitored by each regional health authority in the province and reported four times per year to the Department of Health and Community Services.   A target of 182 days has been set down by Health Canada as a reasonable length of time a patient in Canada should wait for total hip replacement surgery.

The wait times are based on cases with surgery completed. As a total hip replacement is a non-urgent surgery, some patients chose to wait for their surgery for personal or family reasons.  Personal preference is sometimes the reason for the longer wait and is not a reflection of the service being provided.
